FASHION AND STYLE: 3 key Men's hairstyle for spring/summer 2014

3 Key Men’s Hairstyles For Spring/Summer 2014

Time For A Change?
The start of any new season often brings with it a period of reflection and evaluation, and this is particularly true during the transition to the warmer months of the year.
With spring synonymous with terms such as rebirth, renewal and resurrection, there has never been a better time to freshen up your wardrobe or personal style. And one of the easiest, quickest and most dramatic alterations you can make to your current image is trying a new haircut.
With this in mind, I’m going to break down three of Hooka’s most requested hairstyles for spring/summer 2014, in an effort to help inspire your new cut…
1. The Short Quiff
AKA the ‘Ryan Gosling Quiff’, we’ve seen many modern reworks of this classic haircut over the past few years, but the core shape is still proving to be very popular with our customers.
The biggest change I’ve noticed is the variation in length through the back and sides. Some men are choosing to expose the scalp by having their hair clippered extremely tight, producing an exaggerated or disconnected look, while others are keeping slightly more length and opting for a slick finish with all the hair styled off the face.
But which way is best for you? Well, it’s important to take your face shape into account. If you have a round or square looking face then having too much length through the sides can make it appear wider that it is. On the flip side, if your face is long or diamond shaped then you may look better with length through the sides to help balance your proportions.
If in doubt, ask your stylist for their professional opinion – this is a style than can suit ANY face shape. Don’t forget that tight back and sides will also need maintaining every couple of weeks in order to keep the cut looking sharp.

2. Short Back & Sides With Length Through The Top
Whether you hair is straight or curly, there’s no denying how good longer hairstyles look with very short back and sides. This type of cut has become popular with men of all ages and offers a huge amount of versatility depending on the way the hair is dried and the products used.
Again, you must adjust the cut to suit your particular face shape. As previously mentioned, tightly clippered sides are best for slightly rounder or squarer face shapes, but if your face is slightly longer and/or narrower then I would suggest a low fade around the edges, maintaining some length through the sides to help give the illusion of width.
For the majority of men, growing their hair longer pushes them way out of their comfort zone. Without a doubt, this is a high maintenance cut when it comes to styling and keeping it looking its best. It requires you to commit time to your grooming routine, which is not always possible for the modern male, so bear that in mind.

Styling
It’s extremely important to blow-dry the hair into place when styling. Depending on your hair length, type, texture and the finish you require it may need to be blow-dried with a vented brush to achieve the perfect shape, or rough dried with your fingers for a more dishevelled appearance. Some men even choose to rough dry and then style more precisely using hair straighteners.
The option you choose really does come down to how much time you are willing to spend on your hair, although products are designed to help make the process much more efficient. For instance, if you have dry, frizzy hair then apply a smoothing cream to the hair before blow-drying. Likewise, if you have fine hair then apply a thickening lotion to help give it some life and control.
Due to its length, you can often leave this haircut slightly longer between salon visits – it all depends on how sharp you would like to keep the back and sides. I find some clients will start by wearing their hair higher in a pompadour but as it gets longer the fringe is then styled to the side. I always recommend using a good hairspray to control the hair as it grows out, rather than over-applying styling products, which can leave the hair looking greasy.
